Panel Discussion: The Use of Impella® in the ICU

Prof. Dr. Christian Hassager, Rigshospitalet Copenhagen, Denmark

After three lectures Prof. Dr. Christian Hassager, Rigshospitalet Copenhagen, Denmark, and Dr. Federico Pappalardo, Attending Intensivist at ISMETT, UPMC, Palermo, lead a concluding discussion while answering questions by the audience.

The experts are for example asked about specific cases and complications like a pulmonary edema. Overall, the importance of being well informed about every aspect of the patient is stressed empathically.

They also talk about the right timing of weaning. When there are no complications, you should first monitor the pulmonary artery pressure. If the pulse pressure does not increase, when you slowly decrease the pump flow, it is too early to remove the Impella Device. It is very important to be patient and to start the process of weaning very cautiously. Imaging, for example by echocardiography, can help to assess the situation.

Digital Summit: “Use of Impella beyond the cath-lab”

In a recent digital summit, supported by Abiomed, various experts gave lectures on the topic “Use of Impella beyond the cath-lab: open issues and clinical needs”.

The widespread and intense use of the Impella device let experts identify a lack of data regarding the ICU management. On top of that the ICU setting is very heterogenic in different countries and institutions. There is a need to explore this field, for which reason in three different presentations and a panel discussion it is debated how the Impella device and the ICU management of Impella supported patients should be directed.
