Managing Vascular Access and Closure for Percutaneous Mechanical Circulatory Support

Dr. David Schibilsky, University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen, Germany

In the first lecture Dr. David Schibilsky, University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen, Germany, talks about vascular access and closure strategies for percutaneous mechanical circulatory support systems.

To execute a save and good implantation it is important to have visuals of the femoral access. Only in this way a good executed single puncture can be guaranteed, and calcifications and plaques can be avoided. For explantation, various strategies are available, therefore the medical team should stay flexible and adjust the options for different patients and situations. The surgical axillary access is a safe method for the Impella (5.0/5.5) implantation: It has some surgical safeguards and is also a good bail-out for femoral artery complications.

Overall it is shown, that the treatment with mechanical circulatory support systems is very individual and therefore should be further explored.

Digital Summit “Use of Impella beyond the cath-lab”

In a recent digital summit, supported by Abiomed, various experts gave lectures on the topic “Use of Impella beyond the cath-lab: open issues and clinical needs”.

The widespread and intense use of the Impella device let experts identify a lack of data regarding the ICU management. On top of that the ICU setting is very heterogenic in different countries and institutions. There is a need to explore this field, for which reason in three different presentations and a panel discussion it is debated how the Impella device and the ICU management of Impella supported patients should be directed.
