ICU Management of Percutaneous Mechanical Circulatory Support Patients: The Role of Medical Imaging

Prof. Susanna Price, Consultant Cardiologist and Intensivist, Professor of Practice - Cardiology and Intensive Care

In the third lecture Prof. Susanna Price, Consultant Cardiologist and Intensivist, Professor of Practice - Cardiology and Intensive Care, explores the role of medical imaging in the ICU management of percutaneous mechanical circulatory support patients.

First of all, it is important to apply an interrogative, systematic approach. Everything you can see should be integrated with an invasive haemodynamic evaluation and interpreted in context of previous studies, as well as the critical care status and interventions.

Prof. Price advises to interpret medical imaging systems in the context of the patient status to optimize chances of recovery. In order to meet these requirements, it is important to have specific training and skills in imaging used in critical care and mechanical circulatory support.

Digital Summit „Use of Impella® beyond the cath-lab”

In a recent digital summit, supported by Abiomed, various experts gave lectures on the topic “Use of Impella beyond the cath-lab: open issues and clinical needs”.

The widespread and intense use of the Impella device let experts identify a lack of data regarding the ICU management. On top of that the ICU setting is very heterogenic in different countries and institutions. There is a need to explore this field, for which reason in three different presentations and a panel discussion it is debated how the Impella device and the ICU management of Impella supported patients should be directed.
