Cardioprotective Shock Management: Monitoring and Supportive Strategies

Prof. Patrick Hunziker, University Hospital Basel, Switzerland

In this lecture, Prof. Patrick Hunziker, Deputy Chief Physician of the Intensive Care Unit at the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, will discuss monitoring and support strategies in cardioprotective shock management. His experience is based on more than 400 patients who they have been treating with an Impella® heart pump over the last 15 years in his department. According to the intensive care physician, the use of the heart pump is first of all about averting the death of the patient in the acute situation in order to then enable a myocardial recovery. At the same time, the use of the Impella® also helps to protect organs such as the brain, lungs and kidneys and to avoid complications such as bleeding, embolisms or ischaemia in the limbs. In his contribution, Prof. Hunziker also discusses the important monitoring of the patient. The Impella® itself, especially in the activated "Smart Assist" mode, provides important information that can support the treating physician in his therapy decisions.

Digital Summit “Use of Impella® outside the cath-lab: open issues and clinical needs”

In its "Digital Summits" series, Abiomed gives leading physicians a platform. In the current episodes they speak on the broader topic: "The use of Impella® outside the cath lab: open issues and clinical needs". The reason for this is that the requirements and procedures for the use of Impella® heart pumps in the emergency treatment have not yet been defined in the medical guidelines. Until this is the case, it is especially important for Abiomed to share the knowledge and experience of medical professionals who have been successfully using the heart pump for a long time.
